After writing on ‘ways to conceive the gender of baby you want’, someone asked me, ‘how about twins?’ How can you conceive twins? So, I decided to dig a little, and came up with this. Are there ways to conceive twins or at least increase your chances of conceiving them? I have met a lot of people who so much crave to conceive twins. Here are few notices to you if you’re one of them. But first, let’s take a quick look at how twins are conceived. It’s very simple!
They are conceived when a sperm fertilizes the egg released by the woman, this egg then splits into two and develops with the two carrying the same genetic information.
Fraternal twins also called non-identical twins
To conceive fraternal twins, the woman releases two eggs instead of one, and these two eggs are fertilized by two different sperm.
Every woman has been discovered to have a 3% chance of conceiving twins.
According to the Better Health Channel, women in their 30s and 40s have higher levels of the sex hormone estrogen than younger women, which means that their ovaries are stimulated to produce more than one egg at a time. This implies that the more you grow, the greater the possibility.
Twins also run in families. But this applies to the mother. It is her family history that influences the chances of her having hyperovulation (releasing more than one egg at a time). Therefore, you stand a chance of conceiving twins if the gene that makes a woman conceive twins runs in your family.
That’s a plus for you already!
You can also increase your chances if you have fertility assistance such as in vitro fertilization. In addition, there some fertility drugs such as clomid, pergonal, parlodel, and humegon that stimulate the ovaries to support more than one ovarian follicle each month towards maturity. The result is that more than one egg is released.
Taking supplements like folic acid, progesterone, gonadotropins. Studies have also shown that taking folic acids increases the probability of having twins by 40%. Taking herbs such as maca roots and sweet cassava helps this process also.
Women who consume dairy products stand five times more chances of conceiving twins than those who do not. According to a research carried out by Dr. Gary Steinman, eating dairy products correlates to multiple births.
Eating wild yam. The Yoruba people of Western Africa have the highest twinning rate and this has been attributed to the high consumption of wild yam. Wild yam usually hyper stimulates the ovaries making them release more than one egg during ovulation.
Getting pregnant while breastfeeding increases the production of prolactin which increases the chances of conceiving twins.
It is, however, necessary to note that these methods do not guarantee 100% result. They can only increase your chances. But like I always say, there’s no harm in trying!
