HEALTH BENEFITS OF TEARS

HEALTH BENEFITS OF TEARS

So many times you have found this fluid like substance flowing from your eyes, sometimes it’s hard to control the flow. This substance called tears is produced by a gland in the upper lid called LACRIMAL GLAND. It contains enzymes and hormones. Our eyes bring out tears in response to different situations. It could result from irritations, or outburst of emotions such as anger, fear, sadness and the likes. Tear production is absolutely normal, in fact, it becomes an issue of concern if your lacrimal gland is unable to produce tears.

DID YOU KNOW?

We have 3 types of tears

• Basal tears: They are produced constantly to keep the eyes lubricated. It covers the surface of the eye always.

• Reflex tears: They are made in response to irritations and external stimuli such as smoke, dust, wind, chopping onions, or even pepper spray.

• Emotional tears: They are caused by various emotions such as anger, pain, happiness, anxiety, and fear

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO PRODUCE TEARS?

Dry eye

Like I said earlier, it becomes an issue of concern if your eyes are unable to produce enough tears or produce low-quality tears to keep the surface of the eyes lubricated. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), the risk of developing dry eye increases with advancing age and women have a higher prevalence of dry eye compared with men.

The Institute also says that dry eye can occur when basal tear production decreases, tear evaporation increases (the tear dries up quickly), or tear composition is imbalanced. (find out the composition of tear click here) When this happens, your eye is unable to get rid of irritants and infectious pathogens.  This condition known as  Dry eyes Syndrome may cause the eyes to burn, become hypersensitive to light, produce stringy mucus, become blur and red.

You may need to see your Doctor if these symptoms become prolonged.
